b2ap3_thumbnail_Bed-Bug-3.jpgDuval County Public Schools in conjunction with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are trying to prevent the spread of bed bugs in Jacksonville.

“Bed Bugs and Book Bags” is an initiative that teaches students how to identify the parasitic bugs and how to deal with them.  It’s an actual curriculum where teachers in the public schools devote class time to educating their students about the bugs.

The program, which started in 2012, has been a smashing success leading to its duplication across the country, in Canada and in some Middle Eastern countries.

It’s a part of a larger effort in Duval County called the Jacksonville Bed Bug Task Force. The task force was instrumental in helping Trinity Rescue Mission in Jacksonville almost completely eradicate its bed bug population. It’s also been tasked with providing information at health fairs and community events.

“Bed Bugs and Book Bags” is currently available to third through fifth grade students with students gradually learning more as they progress in age. The plan is to expand it to sixth through eighth graders in the near future.

Heavy books and homework may not be the only thing your kids will be bringing home from school. More reports of bed bugs in schools across the country are coming in every day. Just as it sounds, it can be disastrous.

Over the past decade, the number of reported bed bug infestations has exploded. This growth is a result of a built resistance to a pesticide that nearly made them extinct years ago. No longer are these pests associated with dingy hotel rooms as infestations are occurring everywhere from libraries to movie theaters and now schools.

The only effective means of eradicating bed bugs is a professional removal service but the high price tag can deter people away in favor of do-it-yourself solutions that only make matters worse. The first line of defense is early detection. Inspect your student's belongings inside books, back packs, lunch boxes and anything else they may be bringing home where these pests might hitch a ride. Parents with bed bug problems at home are encouraged to call their children's principals so the school is on alert for any issues that may arise.

Known as nature’s hitchhikers, bed bugs can easily attach themselves to a piece of clothing, luggage or along the seams of upholstered furniture. Just think of all the places you find these items. Never fear, Falcon is here! The following tips can help you ensure you’re not bringing any of these unwanted guests home with you after the excitement of the holidays.

  • Carefully inspect luggage for the presence of bed bugs or blood stains.
  • Using a brush, scrub luggage and personal items focusing on corners and crannies where bugs and eggs may be hiding in the seams and folds.
  • Vacuum along seams on to eliminate any bugs, eggs or residue
  • Wash clothing in hot water and set the dryer on the highest heat.
  • If you see or suspect signs of bed bugs or their tiny eggs in a public place, notify someone who works at the  establishment to prevent the possible spread of these dreaded pests.
