Last week on our Facebook, we told you about a new super-strain of head ‎lice emerging just as our children are heading back to school. We’re now learning more about them. Today’s head lice are now resilient to many of the shampoos that have been universally used to kill them off easily in the past.

Permethrin and pyrethrin, common insecticides found in over the counter lice-killing shampoos are no longer effective to 99.6% of the lice that were studied in a 2014 experiment. More costly alternative shampoos are said to be more effective to today’s super lice. Read more from CNN

Nothing ruins a summer barbecue quite like an emergency room visit after being stung. Contrary to popular belief, most stings are from hornets and wasps, not bees. You may notice small nests tucked into the nooks and crannies around the exterior of your home. When these insects feel threatened directly or feel a threat to their nest, they retaliate by stinging.

In contrast, Bees are not usually aggressive and generally will keep to themselves, moving from flower to flower, pollinating plants as they go. While it is often fine to observe this practice, be careful not to touch or disturb their behavior because that is when the bee will sting.

The appearance of these insects varies as well. Bees are generally furry with more stout bodies while wasps and hornets are long and lanky compared to bees. Wasps and hornets also don’t have the same fuzzy appearance as bees. Being able to distinguish between these stinging insects can help you avoid intimidating them and risking a sting!

If you do get stung by a wasp, hornet or a bee, remove the stinger promptly and apply ice to reduce swelling. If allergic to stings, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Falcon offers safe and effective solutions for stinging insects. For more information please see our stinging insect page or call 1-800-532-5266.

Did you know that ants reach for the same First-Aid products to heal their aliments that we do!

A recent study in Finland revealed that ants ingested hydrogen peroxide to combat Beauveria bassiana, a fungal infection that can be fatal to ants.

But where are they getting hydrogen peroxide? It’s actually produced naturally by aphids and decaying ants. The scientists participating in this study experimented with the various amounts of hydrogen peroxide and the quantities they would ingest. The results showed that the ants knew the proper amounts to take in order to heal their ailments or to maintain their health.

The West Nile Virus became a common concern in the early 2000s. Now, this epidemic is rearing its ugly head once again. According to Web MD, “The virus disturbs normal brain function -- including disruption of the nerve impulses needed for breathing -- which can be fatal.” Because the climate in Florida is the ideal habitat for mosquitoes, it is important that we remain vigilant to avoid contracting and/or spreading of this terrible virus, as there is no way to treat it once contracted.

To decrease your chances of contracting this potentially deadly virus, eliminate standing water sources surrounding your home like pet bowls, bird baths, children’s toys or sandboxes, flower pots, etc. You may also get your yard treated by a Falcon professional to eliminate any mosquitoes that may have settled around your home. If you or your loved ones are spending time outdoors, be sure to apply an insect repellent containing DEET to repel any mosquitoes that may be lurking nearby.

Prevention is key. Protect yourself and your family by calling Falcon today to create your customized mosquito removal plan. 1-800-532-5266
